Last year Nino Cilona challenged me to join Movember. I gave him a challenge too: don't shave everything off, and start with a huge, ridiculous moustache, and I'll do the same. We did, it was glorious, and we raised quite a bit of money!
This year we're following the rules: starting clean shaven! I'm pretty sure seeing me clean shaven is more shocking than seeing me with a full moustache, as most of my friends have probably never seen the skin on my lip.

Ow, and this year I'm doing Movember from Rome, hoping that the Italian style rubs off on me. Anyhoo: Behold, be afraid, be ready waving your wallets!

Thank-you for your commitment and support.

We've now arrived at Movember 30 and everyone in this challenge should pause for a moment to reflect on an amazing job done, what can only be described as an epic 'stache and an impressive commitment to help change the face of men's health.

As Mo season is coming to a close, I want to flag that the leaderboards will officially close on Thursday, December 7th at 5 pm EST, marking the moment we crown our 2023 Movember champions of each challenge. While donations can still be received after this time, please note that they won't contribute to the leaderboard race.

Thanks for all you have done this year and will continue to do as we move forward.

We are halfway through the hairy month and we're loving the engagement across the Oil & Gas industry. You've collectively passed the $400K mark and we can't wait to see what you have in store for the home stretch!

A reminder that next Tuesday we will draw 4 winners for companies to send 10 players to lace up their skates for a game of hockey against other Rumblers on NHL ice at Rogers Place arena in Edmonton on Tuesday, December 5.

How To Enter For Your Chance To Win
Companies participating in the 2023 Oil Rig Rumble Challenge will automatically receive one entry to the contest when they raise $20,000 CAD, and an additional entry for every $5,000 raised above and beyond. On November 21st we will randomly draw 4 companies from those eligible to send 10 players each to fill the roster.

The contest is open to Canadian residents, excluding Quebec and will close at 12pm MT on November 21. Winning companies will be contacted and announced later that day to claim their spots. See full terms and conditions here - https://ca.movember.com/terms.

Let's keep up the Mo-mentum!

Ok, so the first few days were a bit awkward. I was basically wearing my fancy dress party outfit to work (minus the male cleavage, the sunglasses, and the hard hat; sorry ladies), and feeling so uncomfortable that I actively avoided looking into stranger's eyes. I remember walking from the coffee machine to my office, making eye contact with a colleague and seeing her friendly smile very briefly change into a giggle. Ow, and then there was that time at the mall when I walked past a guy and noticed him continuously looking at me while sporting a big, cheeky grin.
But none of that for the last week or so. Maybe the public knows about Movember, although I doubt it. Except for the ones on my team, I haven't seen any previously unmoustachioed colleagues. Only one person, unprovoked, used the word Movember to me after seeing me, and in the first week of M/November Google News listed only one Dutch article mentioning it. Such a shame. It's a good cause, but I guess when the novelty wears off...
Ultimately I'm putting it down to wearing this thing with confidence, albeit perhaps more out of habituation than out of pride. As I said to Edith Beerdsen, this thing is growing on me, and it seems to have grown on the people who see me every day too. Some even say it suits me, although one of them is still unclear whether that is a compliment or not. I'm with her :-), how about you guys?

Today was my first day at work ever wearing a moustache, and it has already had its effect on me. To get the matter out of the way, I pointed everyone I talked to straight to my lip: this was not a fashion statement, but a Movember thing! Hard to explain since it's not yet November. I also avoided eye contact with anyone that I'm not on speaking terms with, afraid of any disapproving looks. It's not yet November, and so there's also no critical mass of moustache wearing people around to ease the public into knowing that it's just that time of the year again.
While cycling to work I was wrecking my brain to remember whether I knew anyone who once had sported one of these (apart from the obvious movie stars and wrestlers), and exactly at that time I cycled past a fiftyish year old, aggressive looking bald guy, who perfectly matched the stereotype I associated with this thing. While at Halloween I was mimicking one of the gay icons of the 70's, I guess today it's obviously a biker gang thing. And secretly I love that look. The problem is, I just can't pull that look off (plus, I'm not a hard guy, don't want to be seen as a hard guy, and don't think a hard guy image is suitable for my work, but I do love it on others)!
Before work I did make my moustache more suitable for work. I cut off the Hulk Hogan protuberances that pointed dawn from my jaw, and I did make the "pipes" (ow yes, there are terms for these things!) less wide. This evening I went and bought me a new shaver, and that made matters a lot worse! Enhancing the contrast between face and moustache is NOT what you want to do if you're ashamed of your moustache and want to stop people who see you from five meters away from noticing you. This thing now stands out like a turd in cauliflower soup!

Note: As donations can be made privately, not all donations are displayed to the public.
