Mentale gezondheid en preventie van zelfmoord

Hi there, you beautiful people!

My name's Patrick, and I have signed up for Movember this year to raise funds for men's mental health and suicide prevention, as well as prostate cancer. These two causes are very close to home.

Since my adolescence, I have struggled with my mental health. Last year, I got to the point where I thought I couldn't escape the suicidal thoughts running through my brain. It was not until re-entering therapy and working on rebuilding myself that I realised it had been years since I last cried.

As men, we are taught from a young age to toughen up and push through. That grit and determination can be valuable qualities, but they can also become a burden when we learn to apply them to our emotions, convincing ourselves that asking for help is a sign of weakness rather than strength.

Even with an incredible father who has always set an example of healthy masculinity for me, I still feel societally conditioned to believe that my emotions are something I should bury. More recently, I have been doing a little to change that, learning to be more open about how I feel, allowing myself to be vulnerable and recognising that I don't have to face everything on my own.

I am sharing this because I know how isolating these experiences can be, and I want to do my part to help make these conversations a little easier for other men. Nobody should feel that they have to suffer in silence, and nobody should have to reach breaking point before they feel entitled to ask for help.

The other cause I am supporting is prostate cancer, in recognition of my wonderful grandfather, who continues to live with and manage the disease. He is a man who continues to inspire me and teach me what it means to be a man. Through his example, I have learnt that masculinity is not simply about strength or resilience, but also about compassion and the way we show up for the people we love. Supporting this cause is one small way I can honour him and the many other men and families whose lives are affected by prostate cancer.

Ultimately, I am doing Movember because I believe we can do better for men. We can create a world in which men feel comfortable talking about their mental health, seeking support when they need it and getting checked when something doesn't feel right. We can challenge the idea that being a man means keeping everything to yourself, and instead recognise that there is real courage in being honest about what you are going through.

If you are able to donate, share this post or simply check in on a mate, I would be incredibly grateful. Every contribution helps support work that can make a genuine difference to men's lives
